Berna was in lots of different positions because he runs around like a spaz (which is why I think he's better in midfield). But when defending, he was in the centre so I think you can safely say it was 4-3-1-2.

Where i have been most impressed is his willingness and ability to make the necessary changes. A lot has been made of his "11+3" approach at previous teams but here he has been willing and able to change players and formations when necessary.

My main concerns about him was his lack of flexibility and lack of squad rotation. So far he has done a solid job at both. He has changed formations and rotated pretty well. Maybe Nedved and Paratici made sure it's in his contract.
