It'd still be quite a while before I'd have any concerns about his ability to return to playing at a really good level.
first of all, this
people fap over players that can do well exploiting space given in counter attackings systems while playing for mediocre clubs and wonder why those players have no clue what to do without miles of space behind the defence and a packed penalty box.
This is the main reason why its so hard to find a fullback that suits our playstyle in italy.
Oh shure, players like motta and balzaretti looked great when they play against us, exploiting space behind a pressuring wingback and so on.
However, its an entirely diffrent thing, when you are the one that presses up high, to adequately cover your flank, and dont leave a massive hole. tactical positionning is key here, and beeing hard to pass also helps.
For many reasons, this makes lichtsteiner such a massive back. He'll pressure all the way down the flank, occasionally making runs behind the opposing defence.
Yet, he keeps beeing back in time to block off attacks, and charge down anything that comes down his flank.
For me this quality to do this, is the most important for a marauding full/wingback.
And its for this reason licht demolishes all the so fancy so called "offensive superior" wing players. He keeps them out of their game, and presses em back without getting exploited on the counter.
TO be fair, asamoah does exactly that on his flank, its why our left flank was so solid. Oh, and having Chiellini to clean up anything that might get past, also kinda helps
