I seriously think we are above average. I would call average a team like inter or milan right now, but not us.
Serie A doesnt fool me. Serie A hinders our development by letting us win with defensive approaches. but even then, we have some interesting players who can be fielded in more offesive formations, and with a different mentality im pretty sure we can see at least some progres on this.
But for the time being... i dont see it happening.

Judging by our results in the CL this year, it seems that we do over-rate the quality of the squad. Its hard to understand why because on paper our squad should be right up there with the best barring 1 or 2 players that can be improved upon but in terms of results the team struggles to finish their chances in the CL and squads that we think are inferior tend to bring better results.
We've changed coaches and brought in a guy that usually had good results in the CL and is supposedly more experienced than the previous guy but it seems he is facing the same problem that Conte did in Europe. Perhaps the squad isnt as good as we think it is? are they technically good enough but mentally not strong enough to cope with European games? If we were to bring in another decent coach, would our results improve in Europe? Was our first CL run a case of over-performing given the squad's quality level?
The group this time should be easy enough for us to qualify but the fact that the same problem persists despite changing coaches might say something about the quality of our squad. It is now or never for that squad to show what they can do in the CL. We will be entering a rough transition phase in the next two years.

It is mostly the mental issue with us. Somewhat after seeing the last 15 years of our results in Europe and witnessed majority of those I believe this issue is deeply rooted and for the large part of the last 2 decades we have been underachievers. Even in 2006 we had 8 players in the final of undoubtedly the biggest football tournament, but barely made it to the QF after rather fortunately beating Werder that same year.
Currently players like Buffon, Vidal, Pogba, Licht and Tevez could start in most European clubs, excluding the top 3 which IMHO would be Real, Barca and Bayern. This is not matter of quality, which we always had in abundance.

IMO it's not the mentality or the level of players we have but more the fact this team is very unbalanced (or simply incomplete). We have too many players of certain type and actually none of another. It makes us play the same way all the time and we can't adapt when we're struggling which happens in Europe 95% of the time. It's good to have so much quality and depth in CB and CM areas but other than that we're nothing special. IMO the biggest issue is lack of connection between midfield and attack (wingers, attacking midfielders). You won't find a decent side without those these days that's the way the game evolved. We have to adapt or we'll keep under performing.

Casillas has been costing Madrid points all season and was even getting whistled and booed by the home fans in the madrid derby, and lets not forget he was a complete disaster in the world cup. Gigi would also start for Barcelona too, no question... Bravo isn't that good. Had a long shut out streak, but he's hardly an elite keeper.

No, it's a great club for what they've achieved in the last years and for what they're doing in this one, and the squad they have. If we pick the excuse of European results, not even City can be considered a great club, for example.
Good common sense should be the way, instead of unleashing frustration for the team's bad results in Europe lately by bitching and bashing the team, that surely has some mentality issue in Europe after last year and we've seen it in all the last 3 Champions League matches, with basic mistakes that our players wouldn't have done in a Serie A match, 3 meter passes wrong, hurried decisions and sloppy defending.
