P.S. Few days ago I went to this second hand CD/LP shop and I bought two very good vinyls, in very good condition, of Communique and Love Over Gold for like 2.5 Euros. And I don't even have a gramophone.
Im a Dire Straits fan,but ive never heard any of his solo stuff.Ive heard that it sucks pretty bad though.Something along the lines of his vocals not being up to par.Well TBH he wasnt an incredible vocalist to begin with,but the guitar work makes up for it.He's not a Clapton or Page,but he's still pretty fucking good.

I'm a huge Dire Straits fan but have never really got into Knopfler solo. Anyway his new album is right around the corner, should be released any day now, it's called "Kill To Get Crimson". The tour for supporting the album will also kick off and one of the stops will be ZAGREB!
This will be probably one of my last oppurtunities to see such a great musician live and I'm seriously considering going, even though the ticket is a little steep.
Has anyone here seen him live? Does he put on a good show and does he play Straits tunes as well?

True that, but he's no worse than Gilmour for example, yet that doesn't take away anything from the music. I've heard some of his solo stuff and it's pretty good, sure not up to par with DS but still very good.
As for him being no Clapton or Page, I don't know, he's not far away IMO, just that he incorporates a totally different style. Which one is harder, better to listen to is a personal opinion.

How come you think of Gilmour as a poor vocalist?.I think the guy's brilliant.And coming back to Knopfler,id never put him in the same bracket as either Page or Clapton.These two along with Hendrix are the greatest guitarists ever IMO.But like you said,its personal opinion.
I dont know if Knopfler wrote the lyrics for Dire Straits too,but as far as im concerned,Romeo and Juliet has arguably the greatest lyrics ive ever heard on a love song.Its a ballad,and yet the lyrics dont sound predictable and cheesy AT ALL.Brilliant really.

All those guitarists you mentioned are my favourites, along with Knopfler, only they are brilliant in that "bluesy-pour-your-soul-in-that-guitar" sort of way. Knopfler is more of a traditional guitarists and his solos are mainly used to bring a song to it's climax, whereas with Clapton or Page the solo is pretty much the heart of the song and can last for over 10 minutes. That's a big difference but for me Knopfler is no less of a guitarist than anyone, only his style is different.
Knopfler has written completelly 99% of Dire Straits songs, the only two that he has co-written, that I know of, are Money For Nothing(with Sting) and Tunnel Of Love(with Illsey). I agree completelly it's a beautiful song which sings about love in a completelly non-traditional way. It's not just the lyrics but the music itself gives so much emotion and affection to the whole song. The intro melody is simply amazing and every time I hear it I can literally imagine a Romeo and Juliet scene in my head. Amazing.
