Claudio Marchisio once again confirmed his international credentials by putting in an impeccable display as Italy launched their Euro 2012 campaign with a 1-1 draw against defending champions Spain.
Supporting the midfielder’s top performance against the Barcelona trio of Fabregas, Iniesta and Xavi are UEFA’s Castrol Edge Index statistics, which place him top with a score of 9.15.
The 26-year-old, a dominant presence throughout, struck two shots on goal - one of which tested Iker Casillas shortly before the break - proved effective in possession, and made a vital contribution in tracking back to perform his defensive duties.
The game also illustrated Marchisio’s phenomenal work rate – only fellow Juventus midfielder Emanuele Giaccherini covered more than his 12,179m.
