No much point in the BG declaring now.

This only makes sense if the D finds a G and then exposes himself. Only then the BG can contact him. The D then asks the BG to protect him, if two people contact him then he asks both and investigates one of them.

This is the only scenario that makes sense at the moment. And neither the BG or D should reveal themselves until the D gets a G
And if the D got a G tonight, how will he tell the BG if he doesn't know who's the BG?

He should declare publicly and let the BG contact him, not the other way around.

Am I missing something?
I think you are.

Lets say I'm the D. I say that publicly.
Tomorrow the jailer puts me in jail and the BG protects himself. What about the day after tomorrow? Who will the BG protect? The Gs can try and hit the D or the BG and they'll have a 50% chance to whack one of them.

But if the D remains hidden and we all know only the BG, then the Gs will have trouble knowing who to whack.

Why involve the Jailer for now?

The BG protects the D.
The BG will contact the D in a PM so the G's can't simply whack him, they have no way of knowing who he is.
Unless he is Snobist who you made an argument he is the BG (why would you out him anyway?)

With all that said I don't see the reason for any of that as long as the D doesn't get a G investigated

For one thing, if you're an investigated plain C, I won't vote for you tomorrow.
I would definitely trade the life of a plain C for the anonymity of the D, more so this early

Well, imagine a situation when the jailer knows nothing. He jails the BG. The D went public. Who protects the D?

It's pretty much the same. But if I have to choose which of the two goes public, I'd go with the BG.
