Del Piero is my Diego, says Del Neri
Friday 3 September, 2010

Juventus Coach Gigi Del Neri has taken the loss of Diego on the chin, saying that the Brazilian won’t be missed because there is Alessandro Del Piero in Turin.

Diego was sold to Wolfsburg last week despite being told by Del Neri that he figured in his plans this season.

The Brazilian playmaker then launched a scathing attack on Juventus’ general manager Beppe Marotta yesterday for not being clear with him.

Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Del Neri said: “The club did what it could, taking into account both technical and financial aspects.

“To me, it went well because I have a young squad with alternatives in every position.

“Milan have signed champions that no one could have imagined, but only time will tell who has done well and who hasn’t.

“I remember that a year ago, everyone praised Juventus’ transfer campaign. After the first few games they seemed in a position to compete with Inter, then we know how it ended.

“The debate about Diego is wide. It also regards the financial aspect and involves the club, but we are all aligned.

“It’s up to the club to respond [to Diego’s criticism]. I will only say that Diego is a great player and I hope he finds success in Germany, but we have more presence in the penalty area with Quagliarella. And then again, our Diego is called Del Piero.”

When it was pointed out that Diego is much younger than Del Piero, Del Neri said: “What does that matter? At 35, Doni played 30 games with me at Atalanta and scored 12 goals.

“I can’t assure a starting place to anyone. Del Piero is a Juventus player and it’s important that he is happy. Then we’ll see what happens.

“We must get a place in the Champions League in whatever way possible, because the history of Juventus requires it.”

According to Tuttosport, DN said he is open to any tactical system except 4-5-1.
He also talked particularly about 4-4-2 becoming 4-2-4 ....

Luigi:
Calm down, no one turned us down. Di Natale had already rejected Napoli in a life-choice because he wanted to stay in Udine.

Borriello preferred another team for contractual reasons while for Kaladze it's something else altogether.

But all the others came here running like (Fabio) Quagliarella, showing that they love the shirt."

Delneri insists Juve will be aiming to qualify for the Champions League this season and he brushed off the scepticism surrounding him, particularly from fans expecting a bigger name at the club's helm.

This is the biggest job of Delneri's career. Prior to joining Juve his best achievement as a coach was guiding Sampdoria to fourth place last season.

"Even (Nelson) Mandela was suspicious when he was freed because he was afraid he'd be killed.

"To tell the truth I've felt a lot of warmth around me. But who's sceptical?

"I'd say they're right because they don't know me, even if my career numbers are on my side.

"Not least given that last year when I didn't finish last but 12 points ahead of Juventus."

But if we win against Sampdoria, he would have only lost one game and won another. What would that mean to you?

And then again, what do you mean by "won't accept"? What are you planning to do if we lose the match?

If he wins he gets another chance to keep winning and be accepted as a Juventus coach for the time being, otherwise 2 losses are too much, or are you just so use to losing now that you forgot how it felt to be a winner?

I wont accept it, ill -rep him...

Ill do my best to help notice he isn't good enough for us, whatever it takes, it doesn't matter if my actions change anything or not, i'm a fan and this is my part.
