Maybe he can become a sweeper but he needs to improve in his passing. Besides his defense but that is obvious. Unlike Bonucci he at least is not trying to replicate Bonucci's own licensed and copyrighted back leg tackle.

Not that his passing is poor, but that it takes him more time than needed to pass the ball. He takes too many touches and too much time to make up his mind. Seems like he is unused by actually having some time rather than being stressed and in the midfield forced to play 1-2 touches. He will however improve in this aspect, no doubt. Just something that annoyed me during the Atalanta game.

I don't think the sweeper position suits him. Being a good passer isn't enough to play there. You're still mainly a defender first. It's unlucky for him that we have so much depth in midfield. I don't think he has a future here.
