You need to read the silmarilion and especially tolkiens 12 volume history of middle earth series to find out the history rather than lotr.

the noldor (or noldo) were the followers of finwe and went from Beleriand to Aman at the time of the sundering of the elves.

the races were :

The Vanyar
The Noldor
The Teleri
The Avari

The Sindar
The Grey-Elves and Falathrim
The Nandor
The Laiquendi / Green-Elves

The Vanyar, Noldor & Teleri were also known as the eldar

The Noldor ::

The Noldor under Finwe were taken from Beleriand to Aman on the same island pulled by Ulmo as the Vanyar.
The main body of the Noldor settled at Tirion.
On Feanor's banishment from Tirion he & Finwe removed to Formenos.
When many of the Noldor left Aman:
Finarfin became King of the Noldor in Aman at Tirion.
Fingolfin became High-King of the Noldor in Beleriand.
The sons of Finarfin & Fingolfin became Kings in West Beleriand.
The sons of Feanor became Kings in East Beleriand.
Galadriel married a Sinda and settled in Doriath.
(See Elven Trees for their distribution in Beleriand)
The Noldor who initially settled in Nevrast began first to merge with the Sindar / Grey-Elves (Teleri). In due course the two branches effectively became one throughout Beleriand, though the families of the original leaders retained the distinction.
Following the disastrous Nirnaeth Arnoediad campaign, survivors of the Noldor of Hithlum join the few Falathrim left, in the Isle of Balar. The surviving Noldor of East Beleriand flee to Ossiriand and merge with the Green Elves / Nandor (Teleri).

side note ::

finwes son feanor was the creator of the silmarils (in which he imprisoned the light of the Two Trees that illuminated Valinor, the land of the gods) ... which were stolen by melkor who went on to become morgoth (morgoth destroyed the trees and mounted the silmarils in his crown).... the first dark lord whos right hand man was sauron
