I think I have stated my mind about the movies long ago..
I think they are one of the greatest movies in the last few years.. it has many advantages, but the most important one is that they introduced Tolkein's work to the world, you would be amazed how many people did buy the books after they saw the movies..
but, it could have been far better, as you said, if they stayed closer to the books..
about the Hobbit.. I heard they'll do it, but it is not official yet.. but, I think they will not be that true to the book.. they will skip something.. otherwise it would be too long.. don't you think..? and the idea of a talking dragon who can manipulate the mind of his opponent, won't be that acceptable.. unless they do it exactly as it is in the book..
