I hate shows that get lost in their own plot. Every series should have a main theme, one main plot and they should have a beginning and an end before they shoot the first scene. That's why Rome is probably the best show ever. 2 seasons, 22 episodes, every little bit done to excellence.
Who needs 125 episodeds of the same plot, stretched out to oblivion? I got sick of Lost after the first 10 or so episodes, it was painfully obvious where the show was going. They dragged everything so slowly just to make it last as long as possible, bore you to death with numerous "cliffhangers", etc. Typical Hollywood crap and propaganda. I predict Lost to have at least 8 seasons, then they're gonna cancel it because even the most loyal fans will have had enough.
There are two things to take into consideration when it comes to shows like Rome, Lost, 24, etc.
One is that shows like Rome, The Wire, Entourage, The Sopranos, etc. are all on HBO and the writers have a lot more flex then compared to the writers of shows like 24, Lost, Prison Break, Heroes, etc. because they're on regular broadcast prime-time tv (NBC, ABC, CBS, Fox)
The network executives press, push, and annoy the writers to do various bullshit to 'get more viewers', completely disregarding the story lines or what not. The end product comes out crap because the writers aren't given the liberty to show their work, instead they have to sit down and decide how they can extend the show and what new plot lines to stir up. The end product is crap most of the time.
