EVERTON 3 - 0 LIVERPOOL
Saturday 09 September 2006 12:45 , Barclays Premiership
REDS SLUMP TO DERBY DEFEAT

Two goals from Andrew Johnson and one from Tim Cahill condemned Liverpool to a 3-0 Derby defeat at the hands of Everton and their first defeat in 18 games at Goodison Park on Saturday.

The Reds finished the game with 10 men when after Rafa Benitez had used all of his substitutes John Arne Riise had to go off after suffering a 78th minute recurrence of the ankle injury that has kept him out since the opening day of the season.

The statistics of this game will show that it was Liverpool who created by far the most goalscoring chances, but they slipped to their first Derby defeat since 2004 after Everton capitalised on the few they had.

Everton's goals both came in the first half. Tim Cahill opened the scoring in the 24th minute after meeting Carsley's flick on before sliding the ball under Reina from 6 yards. And Andrew Johnson made it 2-0 in the 36th minute when beating Carragher to the ball and placing it beyond Reina into the bottom left corner.

Not that it was all one way traffic in the first half because Fowler forced Howard into a smart save after just 8 seconds; and Steven Gerrard was agonisingly close when hitting the post after Howard had only been able to parry Luis Garcia's shot.

The Reds dominated the second half and Gerrard hit the post again in the 75th minute in an incident that should have seen them awarded a penalty after Hibbert handled the ball when on the ground.

Liverpool's misery was compounded in injury time when Andrew Johnson scored his second to make it 3-0, in the process making it the first time Everton have scored three times against their neighbours since the Premiership began.

So it will be the blue half of Merseyside who have the bragging rights after this 204th Merseyside Derby, but Liverpool must quickly put that behind them. The Reds have big games almost every week and they're playing PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Our defense sucked and Gerrard hit the post. Im hoping it was just a bad day. I didn't see the match but all the reports I've read say we sucked balls at the begining, played well in the middle and sucked more balls at the end. I just hope we fix this shit before the PSV match on Tuesday or there's gonna be one sad kid.

PSV EINDHOVEN 0 - 0 LIVERPOOL
Tuesday 12 September 2006 19:45 , Champions League Group Phase
REDS EARN GOOD POINT AT PSV

Liverpool have opened their Group C account with a good point after drawing 0-0 with PSV Eindhoven in Tuesday night's Champions League clash at the Philips Stadium in Eindhoven.

Rafa's men will be pleased with their evenings work after a sound defensive display gave a platform that enabled them to create a number of good chances at the home of the Dutch Champions.

The Reds will have been happy at the break after quickly silencing a vocal home crowd and they looked the better side in the first 45 minutes. It was the first time Dirk Kuyt and Craig Bellamy have started together, but they quickly looked to have forged an understanding and they worried the PSV defence.

Bellamy in particular was giving them cause for concern and he got behind Brazilian defender Alex twice in the opening minutes. Indeed Liverpool's first real chance came when Bellamy escaped on the left in the 11th minute, but his pull back just evaded Kuyt, who was hovering in the area.

The Reds had a scare in the 9th minute when Kone ran half the length of the field before hitting his shot against the crossbar and Reina was forced into a good save by a 23rd minute strike from Affellay. But Liverpool were soon back on the attack and Bellamy saw his shot also strike the woodwork before the referee adjudged that he had handled in the build up.

PSV came out for the second half and looked to make their home advantage pay, but Liverpool comfortably survived their good spell and were soon on the attack again themselves. They almost scored in the 57th minute when Pennant's shot forced Gomes into a save; and in the 67th minute Dirk Kuyt struck the outside of the post with an excellent shot from 25 yards.

The home side's best second half chance came in 59th minute when Kone was found by Farfan and forced Reina into a save. And Mendez threatened with a 61st minute shot that flew narrowly over.

Liverpool almost won the game in the 89th minute when Steven Gerrard's volley hit the inside of the post, but they will head home having made a good start in their pursuit of European glory and they'll go to Chelsea on Sunday in good heart.

19 mins : Former Feyenoord striker Kuyt is booed by the home fans everytime he touches the ball but is looking dangerous with his intelligent running in attack
23 mins : Reina does well to stop a well-stuck shot from distance by Afellay
26 mins : Bellamy and Kuyt combine well on the edge of the PSV box but the final ball has a bit too much pace and Gomes is quick off his line to avert any danger
28 mins : Bellamy has the ball in the back of the net following a great through ball from Kuyt but the Welshman had strayed into an offside position and the goal doesn't count
29 mins : Liverpool's Welsh striker is in the thick of the action again but as his close-range shot hits the inside of the upright the referee pulls up play for an earlier handball
31 mins : From a tight angle Bellamy fails to trouble Gomes as he clips the ball comfortably over the bar
35 mins : A timely interception by Alex denies Kuyt a good scoring opportunity on the edge of the PSV six-yard box
36 mins : Zenden goes close with an impressive strike across goal from 20-yards out

72 mins : Substitution: Steven Gerrard for Craig Bellamy:
74 mins : Mendez fires narrowly over for PSV
74 mins : Substitution: Mica Vayrynen for Ibrahim Affellay:
79 mins : Aurelio blazes high into the stands with a speculative snap-shot

Injured Kewell comes home to find cure heres a quick interview held at Melb airport

Dale Paget: Do we know what's wrong? You've had a foot injury, but the groin is still the main problem, right?

Harry Kewell:
The foot's sore, yeah, but it's more my groin. I've got a few appointments to try and sort out my injuries. I've just been down to Melbourne to see some specialists and I've got a few more to see in Sydney.

Dale Paget: Basically a lot of visits to doctors?

Harry Kewell:
Yeah, a lot of doctors visits. Obviously I don't get a lot of free time working and that … Liverpool have sent me over here to get some more second opinions and that is what I intend to do.

Dale Paget: Has it ever flashed through your mind that maybe you can't get through this?

Harry Kewell: Yeah. It always feels like that but you can't look at that situation. You've always got to be positive. I'm not the only person to go through these situations. You've got to think about it. You've got to take time and have a strong family behind you as well, which I do. My club has supported me throughout the whole thing. I'd just like to get back to footy fitness.

Dale Paget: There are many wonderful surgeons in the UK — why come to Australia?

Harry Kewell: I've been everywhere in Europe. We've got to a point where we'd try Australia because Australia's got the best surgeons in the world.

Dale Paget: So you have no idea when you'll be able to play for Liverpool?

Harry Kewell:
At this present time I don't know. I don't want to think about that because every time you set targets you can fail them and you just get more miserable. If you leave it open you can be positive. I'll just take my time and get back that way.

Dale Paget: Have we still got the best of Harry to come?

Harry Kewell:
Yeah for sure. You haven't seen the best of me for a while because of what I've been going through. I'm looking forward to making a full recovery and taking it from there.
