Liverpool have made a cheeky £3.5m bid for Spanish international striker Fernando Morientes, according to the BBC.
The report claims that Rafael Benitez's side have been told to double their bid by Real Madrid if they want to land the 28-year-old.
Morientes, who spent last season on loan at Monaco, is almost certain to leave the Bernabeu in the January transfer window as he is currently fourth in the pecking order with the Spanish giants.
While Liverpool are in desperate need of a striker due to Djibril Cisse's broken leg and the summer departure of Michael Owen.
Morientes recently said: "To play for Liverpool would please any player and in Rafa Benitez they have a technical coach who I have always appreciated.
"But there are a lot of things to sort out. I haven’t spoken directly with Benitez but I know Liverpool want me."
