Italy got easy groups in 1998 and 2002 as well. Croatia was on decline after their 1998 tournament and lost some of their glory players, Ecuador was poor back then as well while Mexico was the only real threat. In 1998 they drew Cameroon, Austria and Chile, ridiculously easy.

So either way, I was right about the draw.

Italy actually could do quite well at this WC. It is well known that they are weak in the group stage and usually get better as the tournament goes on. Having a weak group is going benefit them hugely this summer
