The Bianconeri were left to reflect on what might have been after Lazio booked their place in the Coppa Italia final courtesy of two goals from their only two efforts on target at the Stadio Olimpico.
Antonio Conte’s men will have every cause to feel aggrieved after coming out on top in almost every area across the two-legged affair, only for a combination of Federico Marchetti and stern Biancocelesti defending to deny them a return to the capital for May’s showpiece final.
With Juventus requiring a goal to boost their chances of progression following Stefano Mauri’s valuable away strike in last Tuesday’s first leg, they set about their task from the very first whistle, pinning the hosts deep inside their own half and committing men forward in numbers.
Over the course of the 90 minutes plus stoppage time, Conte’s side fashioned ten attempts at goal and called Marchetti into action on five occasions. Equally as commanding was their grip on possession, 57% to Lazio’s 43%, and 66.2% pass completion rate compared to the Biancocelesti’s figure of 58.2%.
Individually speaking, Sebastian Giovinco led the Bianconeri goal charge with four attempts on target, closely followed by Mirko Vucinic and Arturo Vidal on two apiece.
And as Vladimir Petkovic’s side began to come under increasing pressure, they sought to restrict Juventus’ influence in the middle of the park, rendering defensive trio Andrea Barzagli, Leonardo Bonucci and Federico Peluso the most efficient in possession with the highest number of passes completed.
