After all ,
Riquelme stayed with Villareal for now.
...
Riquelme's future is still up in the air, but he too could have the chance to settle his differences with Villarreal.
Having fallen out with the board before last Christmas the Argentinian was loaned back to his former club Boca Juniors, where he helped them win the Copa Libertadores.
At the end of that deal both Boca and Riquelme said they fancied making the move permanent, but Villarreal turned down the offer and the Xeneizes club were unable to go higher.
Atlético de Madrid were reported to have made a successful bid, but that transfer was never finalised, while reports of Everton making a move were wide of the mark too.
For a move to Atlético to happen, los Colchoneros would have had to off-load either Fabiano Eller or new arrival Cléber Santana to open up one of their three non-EU places, as Sergio Agüero occupies the other and Riquelme does not have a European passport.
Villarreal president, Fernando Roig, announced in early August that if Riquelme was unable to find a new club then he would forget their spat and welcome the player back into fold.
A number was even reserved for the 29-year-old, although it is the number 16 that is waiting for him and not his old, and preferred, nuber eight.
