Riquelme is a crazy old man. Apparently teams in South America have better defenses than Atletico Madrid.
I think its not crazy to suggest they have better organization when defending standards. Of course I have no idea how football is played in SA, but La Liga has never been particularly impressive with this part of their game

I think he just commented on the refereeing standards.

In SA, rougher actions are allowed, so the defenders can stop Ramos by means which would get Real a penalty with European refs.

It's not about which defenses are better.

Yeah, but Atletico Madrid's defense is one of the best in Europe. Plus Ramos does that in the CL as well.

Fair enough, but Ramos would still score imo, there's only so much fouling you can do.

all it takes is obstruct his movements by a little and he couldnt get in position to score. he would still score but not nearly as much as 10 goals halfway through the season

I'd say they have one of the best busses in world football, but they're not that impressive on set pieces. Out of the goals AM have conceded in La Liga this season, 27% come from set pieces (not including penalties), they have scored 7 and conceded 6 from set pieces. RM, for example, are doing considerably better in this aspect, they concede only 7% of their goals from set pieces, they've scored 14 and conceded just 2. This is just La Liga, not CL. It's not just Ramos dominating, but the whole team having a clear (and obviously very good) concept on what they do in free kick and corner kick situations.

Their defense is atrocious both dealing with pace and set pieces but their attack will punish you for your first mistake of the night.
