I think it’s a penalty, but think the rules are pretty dumb there and should be changed if that’s the case. Mertens moved his foot right into the kicking motion of Mckennie, after it had already begun.
If McKennie doesn't kick him Mertens gets the ball. 100% penalty. Just because McKennie was in his backswing it doesn't change that Mertens was impeded.

Thats the point. I've seen softer penalties given than this with VAR assistance. There is no grey area here unfortunately. Challenge in the box = penalty.

I agree. And the rules must say so too. Just think that possibly the rule should have some nuance there. It wasn’t a challenge. Mckennie didn’t even know he was there. He was in the middle of kicking the ball, and Mertens stuck his foot in front of the kick. Seems that should just be called incidental contact there.

Given how VAR has been used especially with handball penalties, I find it hard to contest this penalty when there's a clear challenge made in the box.

Mertens dived for it, starting to raise his hands before the contact. This is obvious in slow motion. And then simulated injury and the Napoli players made a big deal for it. Mckennie went for the Ball, Mertens came from the back. Var should clear it, not give it the other way. This is proof beyond doubt that its corrupted against us. With each and every occassion such incidents happen and always against us in crucial times. We are not only playing against a team, but vs the VAR team too...
Mertens even made dangerous play by doing that, it should actually be a FK for us and yellow for Mertens
He could have seriously injured McKennie

It is unfortunately unavoidable, but Mckennie is guilty for imprudance(I don't know how to put it) or if there is a word for it.
It is his fault for failing to follow the ball and by doing so, Mertens? manages to stick a foot in front of him. I don't know if you can understand what I am saying.
Also the kick is unquestionable.
I get it for sure. I guess I just wonder if there should be a nuance to the rule for when a player sticks his foot from behind into the path of an already begun kick? Seems incidental contact to me.

But like you and others say, with current rules, 100% penalty
