You're actually right about this. Pogba & Vidal work best when they have more freedom.

That doesn't speak well for Conte's talent - I could have told him that just from their performances last year. It's been clear for a while.

Vidal does okay in the regista/deep playmaker role, but it wastes his mobility. Pogba doesn't read the game as well from back there - maybe something about having more of a "set" defensive position (rather than being able to roam more defensively), and it certainly reduces his offensive impact.
