Um of course he's better further up pitch, where he can pull off shots (something I rated him for when he was at Roma). He's barely doing anything playing deep right next to Melo, and that's a rubbish tactic anyway, adds predictability to all of our attacks.

He's playing there out of necessity because we don't have proper width for him to pass the ball around. He needs too much time on the ball and holds on too long to be useful up there.
