Category: Match Reports

In the first leg of the Coppa Italia quarter-finals, played under a heavy snowfall, the Bianconeri are held down home to a 2-3 by Spalletti’s side. Three goals down, scored by Mancini, Tommasi and Perrotta, Capello’s side closes the match 2-3 thanks to Del Piero’s brace.

The first fifteen minutes do not offer much excitement but Juventus try to move up front, without being any threat for Curci. After 22 minutes, it’s the Giallorossi’s first attack with former Juve player Perrotta who tries a right-footed kick from the edge, deflected out for a corner by Zebina. Juventus try to get dangerous in three occasions; the first attack takes place after 26 minutes when Nedved grabs the ball in the area and aims at goal but a defender deflects his shot out for a corner. Then it’s Zalayeta’s turn, on 30’ minutes, when he follows Nedved’s cross with a scissors kick and on 35’ minutes Olivera’s great shot from the long range is cleared by Curci for a corner. On 38’ minutes, Roma break the tie: De Rossi opens up for Mancini who drives down into the area from the left and puts the ball in with an angled shot (0-1). On 42’ minutes, nor Zalayeta or Zebina can find the winning deflection on Mutu’s free kick, while on 44’ minutes Mutu’s fine free kick from the edge of the penalty area ends out. Before the break, Blasi’s attempt on goal from the long range is cleared.

The second half starts with Juventus up front again. After 2 minutes, Mutu serves for Zalayeta in the box but the Uruguayan’s drive is cleared by Curci. Roma hit back after 8 minutes with Tommasi’s finish from the right which ends out. Capello replaces Pessotto and Olivera with Emerson and Del Piero. The Brazilian tries to beat Curci from the middle of the box but his attempt ends high over the bar. On 16’ minutes, Roma double their score: Mancini sends Tommasi in who scores with a right-footed drive (0-2). On 26’ minutes, on Mutu’s free kick, Zalayeta’s header gets high over the bar. One minute later, Capello’s side reduces the gap: Balzaretti crosses for Del Piero from the right and the latter puts it in from a very short range (1-3). On 32’ minutes, Thuram’s drive is kicked back, the ball is intercepted by Nedved but his shot from the right flank ends out. It’s Juventus again in the final minute, with Del Piero scoring the second goal: on 49’ minutes, with a precise free kick, Alex beats Curci and seals the result to a 2-3. The second leg will be played next Wednesday at the Olimpico.
