Despite the Bianconeri bringing an end to Shakhtar’s 25-game winning run with last night’s 1-1 draw at Juventus Stadium, the strength of Mircea Lucescu’s side was clear for all to see.
This is also backed up by the post-match statistics, which reiterate the Ukrainian champions’ supremacy on a difficult night for Juventus. Shakhtar enjoyed 58% of the overall possession and managed 451 completed passes compared to the hosts’ 323.
The Bianconeri did, however, enjoy a greater number of shots on goal (16), with nine of these testing Pyatov in the visitors’ goal. Instead Shakhtar, inspired by Willian’s creativity, created 12 goalscoring opportunities, making Buffon work on five occasions.
Juve had the lion’s share of corner kicks (7 to 1) and found the target thanks to the work of dead-ball specialist Pirlo, whose perfectly executed set-piece was met by Bonucci’s emphatic finish.
