Juventus have encountered Shakhtar just once in the club’s 115-year history.
Both sides met in the last sixteen of the 1976/77 UEFA Cup. The first leg, contested on 24 November 1976, saw the Bianconeri stun their visitors with three goals in the opening 45 minutes.
Giovanni Trapattoni, in his first season in charge of the Old Lady, had already seen off English duo Manchester United and Manchester City, and Juventus kept their strong run going with a resounding first-half display.
Starting on that evening at the Comunale were Zoff, Cuccureddu, Gentile, Alberto Marchetti, Spinosi, Scirea, Causio, Tardelli, Boninsegna, Benetti and Bettega.
It took just 16 minutes for the hosts to break the deadlock, with Bettega gathering Boninsegna’s pass to drive home. Tardelli doubled the advantage four minutes later before Boninsegna’s left-footed strike sent the Bianconeri into the interval with a 3-0 advantage.
A 1-0 defeat in the return leg failed to harm the Bianconeri’s qualification chances, as they sailed through to the quarter-finals with a 3-1 aggregate score.
