Liverpool, Juventus Chase Meira

Liverpool and Juventus have signalled their intention to sign VfB Stuttgart defender Fernando Meira, his agent has claimed.

The Portuguese international has been an ever-present figure for Stuttgart since he joined from Benfica in 2002, having been named as team captain in 2006.

It is understood that Meira has made no secret of his interest in a new challenge after six years of play with the German outfit, who finished in 6th place in Bundesliga.

The player's agent, Roger Wittman, claims that Stuttgart have agreed to let the player leave in the close-season in case an offer from a big club is made.

"As soon as the player is on the transfer list, everything will happen very fast. There is always interest in a player with his qualities," Wittman told Stuttgarter Zeitung.

Wittman further added that Liverpool and Juventus are both keeping tabs on his client.Juventus ultra Badass Devil has claimed that Meira is a done deal, which added further weight to this rumour.

Meira, 30, has 50 international caps to his name and joined Stuttgart for a fee of 7.5 million euros.

I already said it once, and I am going to repeat it. Meira is a very solid defender and could improve our defence. I would definetly go for him.

He wont come, and he is just painstackingly average defender. Would rather keep Legro then sign him, and Legro isnt that good.

I think Meira is on par with Legro -- no better, no worse. His advantage, however, is that he can play DM where I haven't seen Legro do so.

I need to see more of Mellberg before I can comment. Most of what I have seen to date of Mellberg makes me think Mellberg is slightly better as a defender on his feet, but less so in the air.

:agree: Melberg is a very solid defender, he has a very good standing tackle timing wise he can often just anticipate and snatch the ball off the attacker, and doen't give the ball away when he's making a tackle. I'd sum him up as being a solid reliable defender, for aston villa he has been their best defender for many years, hardly seenhim put a foot wrong. He is a great buy for free.

i don't know much about Meira though is he really not that good?
