Juventus make last-ditch attempt to buy Fernando Meira
Italian club offer 10m euros for Stuttgart captain
Fernando Meira

Juventus are reportedly ready to offer Stuttgart a take it or leave it offer of 10m euros for Stuttgart’s Portuguese captain Fernando Meira.

The Bianconeri are currently rebuilding their squad ahead of their first season back in Serie A, and have already signed Portuguese internationals Tiago (Lyon) and Jorge Andrade (Deportivo) in the close season.

However, as much as the club is keen to bring Meira to the Delle Alpi, it is understood that they will go no higher than 10m euros to secure the 29-year-old’s signature.

Midfielder Tiago was positive when asked about the prospects of Meira joining him in Turin, saying: “My compatriot Fernando Meira confided to me that he could join me in Bianconeri.”

“He is a top player, gifted both physically and technically, like Jorge Andrade. If he comes, I will give him a good welcome.”

Meira was a key player in Stuttgart’s championship winning side last season, and the Germans have so far expressed a strong determination to keep their skipper, even threatening Juve with legal action for their pursuit of the player.

I think Barzagli could be equally useful for us. Think we're the right club for someone like the much maligned Andrea.
I am not sure why he is being maligned on here now. But I am not totally surprised, when we thought he was definitely coming, he was put in a poll as 1 of the best defenders in the world. Now because of shenanighans of Palermo president, he is way overrated and all that muck. I like him, I think he is very good on the ball, better than Meira who is very temperamental. Meira had a decent world cup but that usually means nothing. The fact that Inter are now interested in him means he is not very good, as their track record with defenders is not great. Since when did Portugal start producing defenders of high quality anyways? Carvalho and Andrade apart. Chelsea spent 12m on Ferreira and look how he turned out. What a huge waste of money that was. If Inter want him , they can have him. You want Portuguese players, at least go for the skilful ones, as there are so many players of that ilk from Portugal. But no we are going for an area of the field where over the years, they have not been great. We would soon be looking at a Portuguese goal keeper next. For goodness sakes go for Barzagli and Gabriel Heinze who is rated at £6m and seemingly surplus to requirements

Denco has a good point though.

This board is way too harsh on Barzagli. As a person who has seen a few Palermo matches last year, not even Canna or even Nesta would have looked good in that pathetic Palermo defence. I have said numerous times, but their holding midfielder was freaking Guana! Has anyone actually seen him play? He makes Paul Scholes looks like Pep Guardiola. And less said of Fontana, the better. Any shot from 35 yard onwards is an automatic goal.

I dont entirely disregard Meira's credentials, although I do believe there are defenders, better suited to our game, and available at the same time. Barzagli and even Cannavaro come to mind, who, despite being a stop gap solution, would be ideal. Heinze, might adapt equally fast, but for some reason, I see him better out on the left than in the centre. Having said that, a Meira-Andrade centre might just adapt better, given their understanding on the national front. Though, I have to agree, that if we're indeed creating a sizeable Portuguese contingent in the playing 11 (not consciously I'm sure), then it's the more talented mid and frontlines that we should consider.

Stop comparing players just becuz they have the same nationality.
Ferreira is a RB and Meira is CB and that's 1 more reason why NOT to caompare between them.
Whether he is a right back or centre back or left back, the fact still remains that Portugal are not known for their defensive play or producing world class defenders. I have never understood why teams would go to Brazil and go and get central defenders from there or goal keepers for that matter. If you get an English player, its because you want him to impart the bull dog spirit, leadership qualities, never-say-die attitude and passion into your side, not for his technical abilities. Juventus never seem to go to Portugal and Brazil, 2 countries with perhaps the most flair players in the world to get, creative players, we seem to be attracted to their less flair players. The fact that Meira has been facing the likes of Ailton, Klose, Maakay, Kuranyi and the like week in week out, is so much different from having to face the likes of Ronaldo, kaka, Zlatan, Adriano, Crespo, Totti and the other strikers in serieA on a regular basis. For goodness sakes he is not even a regular for Portugal national side. Its not as He only plays if Andrade or Carvalho is missing. I have always thought if you are going to go for a foreign player in any league, go for the very best or the ones with huge potential not a 29 year old whom I have never heard of prior to the wc in Germany. Yes for 16m Barzagli is grossly overpriced and I would not pay that for him either but I would not fork out 9m good smackeroos on Meira either.

don't look like stuttgart won't sell meira, and even barzagli would be difficult to get
seems like we'll get none of these two or to an too high price
