Category: Match Reports

Alex Del Piero, celebrated before the match as Juventus’s all-time best scorer, is the author of the win over Reggina thanks to an extraordinary goal after 45 minutes into the first half.

From the very start, Juventus try to control the match running up front. After 3 minutes, Trezeguet engages Pavarini with a header following Del Piero’s cross pass and after 8 minutes he shoots on the turn but the goalkeeper deflects it out for a corner. After 12 minutes, Camoranesi attempts on goal with a left-footed shot from outside the box, but it is saved. On 22’ minutes, it’s Camoranesi again but his drive misses the target. One minute later, Nedved cross passes to Del Piero from the midfield but he drives his header high over the crossbar. Juventus continue to lead the game but it’s not easy to prevail over Reggina who put up a strong defence. Mazzari’s side attack only on 33’ minutes with Paredes driving a shot that ends out. In the final minutes of the first half, Capello’s side try again to break the tie and they finally succeed on 45’ minutes thanks to a masterpiece by Alex Del Piero who scores the 1-0 goal with an unsaveable left-footed strike.

The home side starts the second half like the first, still up front and after only 2 minutes Cannavaro aims at goal with a finish from the edge of the box but the ball ends out. Two other great actions on Juventus’s side, unfortunately both countered by the opponents’ defence, while after 15 minutes Trezeguet’s header, following Zambrotta’s free kick, ends narrowly wide. On 20’ minutes, Nedved’s drive from the left top corner of the box is saved by Pavarini. On 26’ minutes, following Camoranesi’s free kick, Emerson heads the ball but it ends out. The Bianconeri get dangerous on 28’ minutes: Del Piero’s free kick is hit back and not held by Pavarini, the ball gets to Zambrotta, and the latter’s shot from outside the penalty area is deflected out for a corner. Following the corner, Balzaretti’s great right-footed strike is narrowly out. On 36’ minutes, Del Piero has another free kick which unfortunately ends too high. One minute later, Capello replaces Camoranesi with Mutu who right away performs a fantastic counterattack, triggered by Trezeguet, but the Romanian’s final shot is saved by Pavarini. On 42’ minutes, Nedved tries a right-footed strike but Pavarini counters again. One minute later, a second substitution on the home side: Ibrahimovic replaces Trezeguet. In the final minutes, Nedved and Ibrahimovic attempt on goal again but the result is unchanged. Juventus, who were already Winter Champions, closes the first leg of the season with a win.
