I'm just not sure winning is enough, that's the problem. There were factors totally beyond Juve's or Serie A's control. Abramovitch and then the City guy. Beckham, a singular marketing force like none other I've ever seen in football, given additional leverage by "Bend it Like Beckham." The historical legacy of British Empire. The entry of big name financiers from the US. Etc. It isn't football excellence that put Premiereship on top imho -- if it were, I wouldn't mind as much.

Yeah, I'd rather Juve not win anything and languish in mid-table of the worst Serie A I think anyone has had the pleasure of witnessing, than win European titles and new fans along with it.

That was not my point. Obviously I want to see us be successful again. I was highlighting how some of our fans are too preoccupied with how attractive we are to other fans. Supporting a club is not a popularity contest, and with all the moaning around these parts about the points I mentioned earlier, it comes across as a dick measuring contest.

Well for the record popularity isn't what I'm after, though there is a big hazy area since shirts and tv shares are a function of popularity. It's fine if we're hated, as long as we're relevant. Feared would be best of all. That's what we were, back in the 90s and the early part of the aughts. I remember reading in Vialli's Italian Job, Ferguson talking about the Boksic goal and how he feared us, talking about how one split second lapse was all we needed to tear them apart and how we could never be caught like that. That's the sort of stuff I want to hear again.
