juve, serie a, italian football. it's all blurring together for me (4 Viewers)

Childhood originally in midwest (Kansas), then growing up on east coast (CT and NYC) and now in California, so I have good geographic coverage.
Could they have? I remember the 2003 final. I loved the final, superb defense. But everyone else, that's the reason Italian football stinks and ruins the CL, is what I heard over and over. As if 2003 wasn't bad enough for me already. I'm not sure it's a marketing failure, I'm not sure it could have been avoided by business decisions. I'm not sure if I want a different outcome on those terms. Like a really tough one for me is I take great pride in Juve's tradition of Italian players, Italian managers. That feels a little parochial to me in this era of borderless football. But I don't know if I want to go away from it. I was making a fool of myself in a different thread trying desperately to find a way for Marchisio to start.
Well hell. Now I totally regret it. All I can say is it's deeply held feeling that's been preying on me for so long. I really apologize for any ruffled feathers. Maybe I should delete this post. Do you think I should?

It was to explain the reasons why we encourage posters to reply/add to existing threads more often than if a lot of new people started new threads for each thing to say. In your case, we got some good dialogue here anyway and it's not hopefully splitting the same discussion across multiple threads. I can always merge it if needed.
And to my original point, one of the best things about these worst of times is that the gloryhunters are leaving Juve like dead flies. That isn't all bad, because you know who is left are the real warriors.

I am having a weird experience with this actually. I don't think I was a true Juve fan until she fell. I inherited this club from Enzo, but over the past few years I'm getting more emotional and passionate about Juve than I ever was -- like I mentioned, I just ordered Berlitz Italian. And that's what scares me. If Enzo had been Spanish I would be a Barca or RM fan now and nothing would be able to change that. The global wave hit, and the Premiership rode the wave. That I think will endure. Those fans will pass on the legacy to their kids, and so forth. Juve no longer winning didn't lose me, so why would Liverpool fans drop Liverpool? Even the Arsenal fans haven't dropped Arsenal, they're just dormant until the next Henry. An Henry at Juve won't bring them here I don't think.
Lately I have read numerous posts on this forum speaking of a decline in our appeal to new, young fans. From the Juventus facebook page not having enough "likes", to why we should buy player x because he will attract new fans, to how all your friends are Prem watchers.
Beyond the financial impact of having more fans (which based on the posts in the transfer section, is clearly something the majority do not take into consideration), why is the topic of our popularity such an important issue?
In my opinion, it comes across as a dick measuring contest. The moaning about how pundits and peers are showing less respect to serie a/Juventus is a non issue to me. I could care less how appetizing our squad is to the joga bonito generation. Frankly, I'm happy we don't attract those type of supporters, as glory hunters water down the traditions of great clubs. Real Madrid and Man Utd are 2 good examples. Their matches are tourist attractions.

I agree that EPL or any team in La Liga is no match for top teams in a strong Serie A,with a strong juve there cannot be a strong italy or serie A.
I was just saying that right now,juve has still not recovered and as things stand now i dont think serie a teams can easily beat EPL teams or some teams in la liga. I hope italy never wins a world cup or no serie A team wins the CL unless juve gets back on the top.

I'm still thinking through why I feel the way I do. For me the concerns are not rational, I'm not thinking about revenue streams and fair-play rules. I imagine we would be pretty good there anyway, with our low debt (afaik... in 2010 our debt load was 3% relative to value, vs 50% for some clubs) and high revenue. It's purely emotional.

In fact that game is so huge in my consciousness I wonder if my feelings here would be so potent if Milan had held that lead.

Yeah, I'd rather Juve not win anything and languish in mid-table of the worst Serie A I think anyone has had the pleasure of witnessing, than win European titles and new fans along with it.
It's not jut the joga-bonita approach though. Look at United and they're basically the modern Juve as far as style goes. But their number of fans is astonishing and that's because they were successful at a time where it got easier for people to follow football what with the Internet boom and shit.

Yeah exactly. Is that a cycle though, where teams can jump into the places currently occupied by the likes of United? Juventus has the worldwide following it does because of a specific period of Italian immigration patterns just when Juve was tops. And that has lasted for a century. Folks here saying we'll be back, of course. I'm just not sure getting back to winning scudetti and Euro titles will be the same thing, or even close to the same thing, as what United and Barca caught this past decade.
That's the thing, you never know. A lot of big teams have disappeared never to be heard of again, and after seeing Italian teams this year, I'm less confident than ever about us.

My opinion on this subject is that this whole thing is because of that stupid "one none EU player per year" rule......I would summarise this by saying that by wanting to protect Itallian football so much, the Itallian FA subsequently destroyed it. Its like in that WW II movie where the Jewish mother in the concentration camp gives a birth to a baby and then suffocates it so it would not end up shrunk in some jar on some Nazi captain's desk. Thats what the Itallian FA did.
