The TIM Trophy has become a regular curtain-raiser of the Italian football season since it was first contested in 2001. The tournament, featuring Juventus, Inter and Milan, provides a taster of the upcoming Serie A campaign. All three sides will play each other for 45 minutes each, with Bari’s San Nicola stadium confirmed as the venue for the second year running. A capacity crowd is expected.
The competition has always sparked great interest, wherever it has been held over the past ten years. The 'Nereo Rocco’ in Trieste, 'Del Conero’ in Ancona, the San Siro, Turin’s Olympic Stadium and the 'Adriatico’ in Pescara have all played host to the annual workout. Juventus achieved their only TIM Trophy success in Abruzzo, overcoming Inter 6-5 on penalties following a 1-1 draw, featuring goals from Thiago Motta and Amauri. The striker was on the mark again in a 2-0 win over Milan which also saw Iaquinta hit the target.
This evening will see Conte’s men get proceedings underway against Inter in an unchanged format. The losers of the first game will immediately face Milan, who then meet the winners of the first match in the third and final encounter.
A victory over 45 minutes will see three points awarded to the winning side. If the scores remain level, the game will be decided on penalties. Two points are on offer for the team that triumphs from the spot, with a single consolation point awarded to the losers. In the event of two teams being level on points at the end of the tournament, results achieved in direct encounters will be consulted to decide the eventual winner. If all three sides are tied on points, the team with the best goal difference will triumph.
The TIM Trophy will be broadcast live on Canale 5, with kick-off scheduled for 8:45pm.
