Juventus were forced to settle for a share of the spoils from their encounter with Chievo after the visitors mounted a second-half comeback at Juventus Stadium. A Paolo De Ceglie header put the hosts in the driving seat, but the Gialloblu edged their way back into proceedings when Drame’s deflected low shot flew past Buffon.

Conte elected to change the 3-5-2 system used in recent weeks, reverting back to the 4-4-2 approach championed at the start of the season. Padoin and Giaccherini provided support from the flanks, with Vucinic partnering ten-goal Matri up front.

The Bianconeri got off to a flying start and almost broke the deadlock inside the first minute. Giaccherini’s pass set Matri in on goal, but the striker was unable to steer his attempt past the advancing Sorrentino.

Yet the visitors, buoyed by two successive victories over Genoa and Cesena, proved they weren’t just in Turin to make up the numbers, posing a consistent threat on the counter-attack. Sammarco registered their first attempt on target, heading into the arms of Buffon.

But an increased spell of Bianconeri pressure eventually reaped rewards, with the opening goal coming from an unlikely source. Pirlo’s teasing free-kick was glanced goalwards by Chiellini, who saw his header cannon back off the upright. De Ceglie, however, found himself in the right place at the right time to nod home for his first goal of the campaign after 17 minutes.

Back came Chievo, with Buffon scampering off his line to smother Thereau’s attempt after the striker turned Chiellini inside the penalty area. And the Gialloblu continued to edge closer to restoring parity as Acerbi rose highest and planted a header just wide of the target.

Juventus weathered the storm and went back on the offensive. January arrival Padoin almost opened his account in spectacular fashion, executing a venomous 25-yard strike which forced Sorrentino to sprawl to his right and tip wide.

Giaccherini also threatened in the closing stages of the first-half, latching onto a raking pass from Bonucci – on in place of Barzagli – before volleying just wide of goal.

The restart yielded more of the same: Juventus doing all the pressing whilst remaining mindful of Chievo’s ability on the counter. Acerbi stung the fingertips of Buffon with a powerful strike which travelled through a crowd of bodies, before Padoin found space in the area to draw a save from Sorrentino.

With less than quarter of an hour remaining, the visitors got themselves back on level terms. Moscardelli’s deep cross fell to Drame, who immediately turned the ball goalwards with a powerful left-footed strike that squirmed over the line.

Conte took instant action, sending on Del Piero in place of Lichtsteiner. And the captain went close to finding a winner with just five minutes to play, seeing his left-footed attempt blocked after playing a delicious one-two with Vucinic.

Pirlo almost had the final say in a frantic finale but found Sorrentino equal to his rasping 25-yard strike from distance.

The Bianconeri, who extend their unbeaten Serie A run to 25 fixtures, will look to get back to winning ways when they face Bologna on Wednesday night.
