yeah he deserves to win the "thank you for all your 20 fabulous years" award.but each year he failed to win the Ballon D'oro, there was another one who had a better performance that year.

Not talkin about this year... his carrer offer ya more than 20 fabulous years to choose from...
He has had the bad luck that every year that he played well, there was someone else who played even better. Maldini is a legend, and has been playing on the highest level for 20 years, but the Golden Ball isn't a career award, and the best player of 2005 isn't Maldini.

Although I really hate Chelsea I think Lampard deserves it most.

he doesn't.I respect him a lot but he doesn't deserve it.the season that Nedved won it,he was in his best form of the recent years but he didn't win and IMO Neddy deserved it more.but now,I think he is one of the reasons of Milan problems in defence.

I completely agree with you.I couldn't say it better.I like Maldini too much and respect him even more.he is a true legend.

Lampard had an excellent season but I'm sure Gerrard will win it because he did a great job not in a great team such as Chelsea.

Yes, I know. And last year wasn't a winning year for him, so he doesn't stand a chance. It would be nice for him to get it at some point though.

who said it?of course defenders' chance to win an award is less than a striker or midfielder but it doesn't mean they'll never win a major personal award.

Even in the Azzurri team, there is some1 who performs better. I would like to say that he is overlooked and overshadowed at times.

I would like to see that. Shame it's not going to happen.

It has become a trend and it rarely happens to defenders. I would really like to see a denfeder lifting the Golden Ball.

Defenders r so way underrated in football. The attacking midfielders, playmakers and the strikers r always the 1 which attract attention the most by their beautiful display of fancy footwork and scoring goals while defenders do all the hard work protecting the goalkeeper and shutting down some of these attackers, yet they r not mentioned. When a goal is conceded, they receive all the blame by the media. Football world these days r so sad.

I actually don't know, but at least I know Mattias Sammer wasn't a striker or an attacking midfielder but he won it at 1996.it also happened for Beckenbauer.

agreed.they're really underrated because they don't amuse football fans.this is exactly why ppl prefer to watch Barca more than Juve :D

Even Capello thinks that Maldini should win the Golden ball.

Ibra rested for Sampdoria Tuesday 25 October, 2005

----------------------------------\-----------------------------------------

Juventus will have to beat Sampdoria on Wednesday night without the assistance of Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The Swede, widely considered as the club’s most important attacker, has been omitted from the squad ahead of Saturday’s clash at Milan.

Ibrahimovic picked up a minor leg injury at Lecce, but he should resume training on Thursday morning.

In his absence, Alessandro Del Piero and David Trezeguet are set to lead the line as the outfit look for a record ninth consecutive League win.

But boss Fabio Capello is remaining cautious given the ability of Walter Novellino’s side.

"I’ve played alongside Novellino in the past, he’s a good Coach and has done well where ever he has been," the tactician stated on Tuesday.

"They are without the suspended Francesco Flachi, who is an important player, but they have some good back-up options.

"The game could be similar to last year’s when they punished us on the counter-attack in the 1-0 win."

Capello has used the rotation system with success so far this term and expect a diverse Juve again at the Delle Alpi tomorrow night.

"I’m forced to make changes because we have a lot of games to play in the next 10 days," he added.

"Take Fabio Cannavaro for example, he needs a break and there will be room for everyone in the squad."

Lilian Thuram is thus expected to partner Robert Kovac in defence, while Manuele Blasi should replace the injured Patrick Vieira in midfield. Adrian Mutu may also fill in for Pavel Nedved on the wing.

Capello concluded by commenting on the fact that nine of his players are up for the Golden Ball.

But he was surprised that Gianluca Zambrotta and Alex Del Piero were not amongst them.

"I’m stunned that they’re not there because they have done well and are important players," he noted.

"At the end of the day though it is down to you journalists. Who should win it? I don’t look at the number of goals scored, I look at the overall player. Therefore, I’ll say Paolo Maldini."
