Alex gets work permit

Chelsea have been given the green light to sign Brazilian defender Alex after he was awarded a work permit by the Home Office.

The centre-back will now undergo a medical and hold contract talks with the Blues, who have had the option to sign Alex throughout his time at PSV Eindhoven.

However, it is only this summer that Jose Mourinho decided to activate the clause as he looks to add to his defensive options, which was an area of weekness last season.

There was some concern that Alex may have struggled to get a work permit given that he had not played in 75% of Brazil's internationals over the past two years.

However, Chelsea confirmed with a statement on the their official website: "At a hearing today, Alex was granted a work permit.

"He still has to agree personal terms with Chelsea Football Club and have a medical."

Alex will follow Tal Ben Haim, Steve Sidwell, Claudio Pizarro and Florent Malouda in making moves to Stamford Bridge this summer.
