Reports in Italy suggest that Rennes stopper Jacques Faty is close to joining Juventus at the end of the season.

The 22-year-old defender is contracted to the Ligue 1 side until June 2007 and could move to the Bianconeri on a free transfer.

“In June I will move to Juventus, I hope the deal will be finalised soon,” said the player in an interview which confirmed the recent speculation in France.

“My brother [Ricardo] plays at Roma and has spoken to me about Juve and, of course, I would be happy to play with them,” added the youngster, who has won 14 caps with the Under-21 national team.

“Didier Deschamps is a very smart Coach who knows me well and admires me. I believe we will know more about this issue soon,” concluded Faty.

The central defender was already paired with the Old Lady in the summer, when the club was in need of new faces after the departures of Fabio Cannavaro, Lilian Thuram and Gianluca Zambrotta.

The Frenchman is valued at £1.7m and is part of the Promotion Sport Consulting group, who manage Juventus stopper Jean Alain Boumsong.

Juventus have already signed Zdenek Grygera of Ajax for next season and are seemingly close to finalising the transfer of world champion Andrea Barzagli from Palermo.

Faty has been a Rennes player since 1999, although he only signed professional terms in 2002. He became an integral part of the 2003-04 Rennes team which historically achieved qualification to the UEFA Cup.

Faty started to lose his place in the team following the arrival of Ghanaian John Mensah early in 2006. The departure of coach László Bölöni to manage AS Monaco did not help his claim either. Pierre Dréossi came in to fill in the vacant coach's position and used Grégory Bourillon and Mensah as the main central defence partnership for the 2006-07 season.

Faty became more and more unsettled as the season went on, and in October 2006 his patience run out. Faty announced his desire to leave the club when his contract expires in June 2007. [2]

A knee injury to Mensah gave him a run in the side, and to his credit, he put in some decent performances. The Rennes management are currently negotiating an extension to his current deal, but he is unlikely to sign.

Recently he expressed his interest on joining Serie B club Juventus.

It seems that we have signed him for free and he will join us in summer:

Ancora un colpo di mercato per la Juventus, concluso l'accordo col difensore ventiduenne del Rennes Faty.
    Il giocatore arrivera' a Luglio.
Queste le sue prime dichiarazioni rilsciate al Corriere dello Sport: "Sono pronto. Thuram il mio idolo"

Yeah, I agree that he's unloyal but I think that Faty means he is an idol of the <footbal player> Thuram and not of <person> Thuram.
he wants to be a sub??:p
ya i know what he meant in the beginning, but it's not nice to say that especially since he's joining juve(juve fans hate thuram)
its like barcelona buying a new player, n that player saying my idol is figo(who joined real madrid)

Im hugely sceptical about this one...he could very easily fall flat on his face when he comes to juve. But as he has the potential factor he should be given the benefit of the doubt until he shows what he really is like.

Still need a strong CB, but alas i doubt it with Kovac, Grygera , Boum and possibly faty, im sure DD will see this as sufficient.
