hiya guys

i have owned an ipod for a little more than a year now, and at first i thought 10gb would be enough, but the magic about ipod is that, once you get it, you will somehow download a lot of stuff onto it and never delete it. So i know ppl with like 30 gigs and still manage to fill them up.
I think its better to get a bigger one because you can use it as a HD, and i think it will take you less than a year to fill up your ipod.

one thing though is that it seems like the ipod has a limited battery lifetime, and it is not possible to change the battery once it goes dead. And it seems as if the recent edition of ipod firmware has some problem which causes the ipod to crash and go crazy. something to be careful about

At the Apple Store they will replace your battery for $100.

But it will take you a couple of years to kill it :)

Quick question.

My data is currently being uploaded on an Ipod, even though I didn't tell the software to do that.

Will directory structure stay the same as it was on my hard drive?

Upload is kind of slow too... one song per second.

It depends on how you set up iTunes. There are options in iTunes to keep the default directory structure, by default it my reorganize it the way iTunes likes it, I am not sure.

The iPod is also set on auto-synch by default, so every time you connect it it will synch the library on the iPOd with the library in iTunes. Note this if you synch it with iTunes on a different computer and auto-synch on that version of iTunes is on, it will put that computers library on your iPod, even if its one song and delete yours.

Thanks, BigIzz

So if Ipod and Itunes are by default synchronized, this means that changes I make to Itunes will automatically be effective in the Ipod? So this should probably apply to the directory structure.

No, directory structure on the iPod isn't easily understandable. All the files are renamed numbers and put in one of 19 directories. The software knows where everything is though. After a while, you may need to resynch the whole library because the iPod can get cluttered (which is also why I reccomend that you keep the library on both the computer and the iPod because the iPod isn't the most reliable storage device, there may be times when you need to do a restore and if everything is in iTunes, it will just synch back up with a click or two).

They do this so you can't pull files off the iPod (although this can be done with aftermarket software).

Thanks.

Another thing is that my itunes do not have an icon for the I-Pod itself (where the manual says it should be). There is also no "options" menue in the itunes. I wanted to set it up to use as a storage devise but I couldn't. Did you face with this before?

The iPod icon will be there when you plug it in. If you right click on it, you can access the options.

You should always be able to use it as a storage device, check in my computer and it should be listed with the drives. You can just drag and drop files (not music you want to listen to though, the iPod won't know its there)

Bleh sounds messy. Can't you just use it as a usb mass storage device?

My iriver has that stupid shit too, you're supposed to use their crappy software to transfer files to the player, but there's no way to transfer them from the player to your harddrive. :lazy: Even though the recording function allows you to tape stuff from the radio or to take voice notes for yourself. :lazy:

Fortunately, iriver have done a lot of work to improve their firmware and there is a version that makes it usable as a mass storage device. :)

if you put your music directly onto the ipod like it is a removeable hd, and then load it onto the ipod's playlist, it will just copy the song into its song directory.

That would take a while with my 1700 songs and just 11 directories.

I've just created all the playlists I need (similar to my directory structure) on the itunes and sinchronized it.

It took more than ten minutes to transfer 626 songs to my iPod because my computer "doesnt have a high connection USB port" or something like that

I love the "Music Quiz" feature it has!!
