IMO, there is no point in getting more compression out of songs. Codec programmers should work on better sounding quality codecs. Formal introduction of the sourround sound would be nice too. But my dream is that music begins getting released in its individual track layers. ie the vocals, bassline, rhythm, melody would all be on different tracks and customizable. Of course this could cause copyright problems and abundance of remixes, it would really help the avid audio freaks to truly control and equalize their music.

I'm also waiting for DVD-MP3 players. That way one could burn a DVD disk filled with MP3s and use that in a car.

This would be very interesting. Mogwai did something similar to this in their last album, they provided a trial version of some audio software and then all of the individual tracks so you could mix it the way you wanted to. I think it would end up being a novelty though, or used by DJs. I wouldn't like it that much because the music is already equalized by the band before the CD is pressed, so they have the bass and vocals where they want it in the mix. It is a part of the artistic vision of a song/album and I don't know if I would like to take that away. It also might make things a bit too easy for DJs. It would be neat to play with though.

Ok, I found several places that sell the new 4g iPods here, and the price is smaller. This is very good news, and also means that I could probably stretch towards the 40GB iPod.

What do the experts think? Is worth paying a bit over a 100$ more for the 40gb version? It includes some sort of dock, is that any good? I want opinions!

Yeah, it really depends how much music you have and how lazy you are. If you've got less than 10GB of music, then there's not much point getting such a large unit. On the other hand, if you have the cash to burn and you've got about 20GB, you can just transfer all your songs at once instead of having to make 5 different mixes.

Then again, these audiophiles that you speak of wouldn't dare to listen to their music on such unprofessional equipment as an iPod :)

... just calculated what I have.

1,269 files
12 directories (one for each year between 1992 and 2003)
76 total directories
7_486_369_685 total bytes of music (6.97 gigs).

So all I need is 10 gigs.

The ipod is pretty nice but it's a bit bulky and heavy for my choice. But it depends on how much storage space you want, cause with large amounts (1GB+), harddrive based is the only way to go [for now].

iRiver make kickass music players btw, here's a taste: http://nordic.iriver.se/products.php

I have the iFP-180, 256MB. It's weighs nothing, plays 20h on a single AA battery and it's so small you hardly notice having it with you. :) A weakness of iRiver is that they have poor ogg support for now (newer models have it, older ones don't) but since I don't use ogg it doesn't affect me.

    Congrats Torkel

(I'll assume you mean you did)
Yes I did. :D Thank you.

I love it. Had some problems getting started, as I'm using Windows ME (considered changing to XP, but decided that it would probably be a real pain), but it didn't take too long. Gonna be a hard time filling it up since I got the 40gb.

My condolences. I can see why it would be a huge pain, but let me tell you it is very well worth it. I have used every windows OS since 3.11 and ME is far and away the worst OS I have ever used. So if you are having any problems with it crashing or poorly managing your RAM, I would strongly urge you to change to XP.

Of course, if you aren't having any problems, then there really isn't much reason for you to change.
