I loved that one. HP's advertising slogan now is "HP - invent". Invent what? Buying a bunch of iPods and throwing your logo on it? Would you believe that was HP's big product unveiling of the summer? Pathetic...

But for everyone worried about iPods and PCs vs. Macs, you all do know there are great, competitive, and often better options than the iPod out there, right???

I swear, there's nothing that says "sheep" to me more these days than seeing someone with those white ear buds...

Just because someone else has an iPod doesn't mean that's the best choice for you, OK?
It's exactly like a flock of sheep, I agree. It's all in the advertising, iPod is supposed to be so hip, so everyone wants it, often probably without researching for other options. There are lots of related products that could be just as good or better depending on your needs.

Matt, maybe it's the way you explained it but it sounds like a drag to transfer music to the player if it has to go through itunes. What about linux et al?

It doesn't have to go through iTunes, at least on a PC there a numerous other programs (both free and paid) that can do it. I do think that iTunes is the best and easiest way to do it though. I used the iPod for months before iTunes for Windows even came out.

The point is that the iPod manages its files through a central database. Whatever is used to upload songs onto the device must be able to tell the software on the iPod that the song is on the hard drive and where to find it. If you just drag and drop files into it using my computer, the iPod won't know the songs are there.

You can use the iPod on Linux, even though it isn't supported by Apple and probably isn't that easy. http://www.cs.duke.edu/~geha/ipod/

No sweat, I don't have one and I don't plan on getting one either. Will tell you I were made to jump through some hoops to get it working in linux though. As with much other hardware... :lazy:

Yeah, you have to press "eject iPod". Even that doesnt work for me using eaphod, I have to turn off my machine to disconnect it.

What do you mean? You turn off your computer? I tried closing I-tunes, it doesn't work.

Where is the "eject Ipod" button?

There is a little up arrow icon on the bottom of iTunes that will do it. You may have to select the iPod first because it might be eject disc normally, I can't remember. I think you can also right click on the iPod in the Playlist window and do it. You can also unmount it via Windows, there should be an icon in the system tray that has all of the hardware that is currently hooked up.

I should warn you you shouldn't leave the iPod with "Do Not Disconnect" on the screen. When the iPod is in that state, the hard drive is constantly spinning so it is creating heat and wearing out the hard drive so it's best to not leave it like that for a few hours. Transfer the files and then disconnect it.
