Gianluigi Buffon impressed with a couple of fine saves in the 4-1 win over Germany and used the opportunity to turn on his critics.
“I’ve been in this career for 11 years and have confidence in my abilities, so it irritates me to see people try to suggest I’m a timid goalkeeper.”
The Juventus shot-stopper was ruled out for four months following shoulder surgery in August and there have been reports that he has lost his confidence.
“We gave an answer to the critics, and in particular my own, although Germany were a little less passionate in their approach. This is not the team we’ll see in the World Cup, that’s for sure.”
Buffon’s best save of the evening was from teammate Luca Toni, whose defensive header was going into the net.
“If that header had gone in, Toni probably would’ve celebrated!” joked the goalkeeper. “These things can happen and it’s important to be ready for anything.”
The Juventus man also came out to defend his club colleague Alessandro Del Piero from the critics.
“Ale’s form has been going on for so long and with such consistency that it’s no longer a surprise to see him perform at this level.”
Simone Perrotta returned to the Azzurri set-up thanks to his fine performances with Roma and came on as a substitute against Germany.
“This was an emotional occasion, but above all a satisfying one, as to come back to the Italy squad after 18 months shows I’m doing something right at club level,” said the midfielder.
“You can sense the team spirit now, very much like the one at Roma, and it feels like we’re preparing for this tournament in the right way.”
