Yeah 5 points is bad!, the ones with three points and went through was good :), Italy just have to deal with judge errors (WC02) and fixed games.

Miccoli shines in Italy test
Wednesday 1 September, 2004

Marcello Lippi has tested out the 4-4-2 system he aims to use against Norway and the stars were Fabrizio Miccoli and Bernardo Corradi.

The Coach had revealed this week that he would be going back to the more solid tactical system following the 2-0 defeat in his debut against Iceland.

“This match had some positive signals,” said Lippi, “as in these three days at the training camp the players have given 100 per cent.”

With Alessandro Del Piero still out of full training due to a muscular problem, today joined by Milan defender Alessandro Nesta with a similar issue, the front two for this test were Fabrizio Miccoli and Alberto Gilardino.

“Nesta has worked a great deal with Milan over the last week, so I was the one who asked that he be rested. As for Del Piero, there are still a few physical problems, but I expect him to resume full training tomorrow. I already know who will start the game," he added, "so my only doubts are who will be on the bench.”

However, time is running out if the Juventus captain is to be part of the starting eleven against Norway. His place is increasingly moving towards Miccoli, who only today revealed the rivalry between them in Turin.

This opening 50-minute mini-encounter ended 5-0 for the Azzurri and the star was Miccoli, who bagged a brace around goals from Stefano Fiore and debutantes Gilardino and Daniele De Rossi. Intriguingly, Gianluca Zambrotta was fielded on the wing rather than as a fullback.

In the second half of the match against the Under-18 side, Lippi changed to a more powerful partnership of Luca Toni and Bernardo Corradi. The Valencia forward was on form with a hat-trick in the 7-1 result, while the other scorers were Toni, Matteo Ferrari, Zauli and Aimo Diana.

Italy A 5-0 Italy U18

Scorers: Miccoli (2), Fiore, Gilardino, De Rossi

Italy A: Buffon; Bonera, Legrottaglie, Materazzi, Favalli; Fiore, Gattuso, De Rossi, Zambrotta; Miccoli, Gilardino

Italy B 7-1 Italy U18

Scorers: Corradi (3), Toni, Ferrari, Zauli, Diana

Italy B: Pelizzoli; Oddo, Legrottaglie, Ferrari, Zauri; Diana, Blasi, Pirlo, Ambrosini; Corradi, Toni

Marcello Lippi makes no declaration on the eve of the first World Cup qualifying match against Norway, but he is ready to make his official debut as head coach after the introduction he had in Iceland and he is fully conscious of the fact that he has prepared for the match in minimum detail. "I don't want to make any type of declaration - said the head coach - but I can say that we will do everything with the right enthusiasm and with a great deal of attention. I want the players on the field with the clear felling that they have done everything possible, leaving nothing to chance, in light of this important appointment."
The fact that Del Piero will not play in the match against Palermo does not bother the head coach. "Del Piero will not play in Palermo because he hasn't been able to work out continuously with his teammates this week. He has had a muscle problem that he has fully recovered from. He still isn't ready but will be against Moldavia. I only have to decide whether to have him on the bench or not."

Lippi has clear ideas about Norway: "It is a strong team with eight straight wins on its record. They have a physical way of playing and they base themselves on power- We have to give our best and start off well. All the players understand that you work out for a certain type of match. All of them understand that there will be changes and those in the stands will have time to play on Wednesday in Moldavia." Apart from the preannounced turnover, the coach prefers not to talk about the starting lineup for tomorrow. "I won't tell the players who will start until tomorrow morning. I have different solutions based on the tactical setup. Some young player from the Olympic Games might make his debut, but I'm not sure. What I do know is that the Under 21 players have given new life to the National team".

Even without direct confirmations from Lippi, the starting lineup, based on the 4-4-2 module, that will go out on the field tomorrow at the Renzo Barbera stadium will be: Buffon ; Bonera, Nesta, Materazzi and Favalli on defense; Fiore, Gattuso, De Rossi (or Ambrosini) and Zambrotta at midfield and Miccoli-Gilardino on offense. Norway, coached by the new coach Age Areide, heir to the guru of Norwegian football Egil "Drillo" Olsen, should be on the field with a 4-2-3-1 whose strong points are the wings Christer Basma of Rosenborg and, above all, the terrible left-footer John Arne Riise of Liverpool. Even if the team has recently abandoned the long pass for a more maneuvered type of play, the risks for Italy will still come from the offense. Whoever by Hareide as offensive end, the ex-Roma player John Carew (now with the Turks of Besiktas) or the expert bomber of Austria Vienna Sigurd Rushfeldt, will have the header and physical strength as the best weapons.

Carew just scored in the 1st minute. Holy shittee. Haha.

I hope Lippi regrets not putting Del in the line up. Not like it matters, but ya.

Falling down, with the back of his foot, with a defnder on him in the box, and he manages to curl it around the keeper
