Which makes me conclude that it was not a technical decision but personal to force him out and give him no other choice. Only Vucinic I would have put him ahead of Del Piero in his last season.

Therefore what I was saying, Laughing at Totti whereas Dp was treated even worse except that he kept quiet isn't smart.
You are missing the point entirely. Del Piero was treated worse than Totti and he deserved to play more not because he was a club legend, but because he was way better than Borriello, Matri and Quagliarella. The club publicly forced him out and humiliated him by saying he can't stay regardless of the salary, but Buffon can stay as long as he wants. Yet, Del Piero kept quiet and helped the team win the Scudetto. Totti can barely walk, he has no place in this Roma team and should have been kicked out 2-3 years ago. In fact, Roma have treated him extremely well. And now that the team is winning without him, he goes out bitching.

The point is - Totti is a piece of shit.

He left at the right time. If anything maybe even a year too late.
:agree:

btw spalletti about special treatment:
http://www.football-italia.net/80211/spalletti-totti-can-be-giggs

“I asked him do you want to be Giggs? You can be Giggs. Do you want to be Nedved? You can be Nedved. If you want to be a player, then you have to be on a par with the others in the team and I can’t allow you any special treatment.”

so guys, do I have to shout for Bilan tonight?
don't waste your precious time and energy, it'll be an easy win for nipples. milan will be without romagnoli, and that meant 2 defeats from 2 matches so far for them.

Looks like it. I expect Napoli to win all their home games, anyway. Only Bacca can take points off them tonight.

Nedved was different to them all, including Giggs. He was still an absolutely key player for us and called it a day before he became a bit-part player. Giggs was waning for several years and then had one last season where he barely held on to relevance. But not everyone can be Nedved.

i think spalletti was referring only to their respective positions at their clubs: giggs is an assistant manager, nedved is part of the board, and i guess both positions were offered to totti. so the reference wasn't about their career endings.

I read that few days ago, Marotta saying Buffon can stay as long as he wants. It made me happy and sad at the same time because what I was saying back then in Dp's last season that it was personal everyone thought I was being emotional but it's fact.

We did the same with Alex.

This just goes to show the difference between Ale and Totti not between the clubs.
ADP's time was up. There is a mountain of difference there.

I think Del Piero just wanted 20 years with Juve. Surely he didn't think he was going to retire here, especially considering that he is still trying to play now aged 41.

Obviously Alex didn't agree with the timing but I for one did, he deserved a more important role somewhere but wasn't at a level to have it with Juve. When you look at our team progression it's clear we made the correct sporting choice. Sentiment does come into it but the club works in another way, we're not Udinese or Chievo.

Totti is in a similar boat, he can go abroad if he wants to stroll about spraying passes and shots.
Absolutely. It was a business decision but some people obviously take it personally. :D

He's better than that, that's the point. He barely played in his last season with us, 500 minutes in the league out of a maximum 3400 or so. He was a Coppa Italia player. Vucinic was clear first choice and he ended up behind the likes of Borriello and Matri. Who knows how bad it would have been another year later.

He left at the right time. If anything maybe even a year too late.

The thought of Alex getting even less playing time by staying one more year would have been an even bigger insult to his legacy. There would have been even less minutes for him if he stayed one season longer. It was obvious that the club was going to expedite moving on to the next chapter in their history sooner rather than later

The board did the right thing by announcing it early in the season.

It avoids the type of melodrama that you are seeing now, that could potentially undercut the remainder of a season for Roma where they are finally starting to find themselves. And yes, I understand that Alex would not be making a public spectacle of it the way that Totti is, but it would not have stopped the media constantly asking the questions during the season unless the situation was handled early on.

And is there even a right way to handle something like this?

- - - Updated - - -

The only right way to do it would have been if Alex had announced that it was his last season

Carpetface decided that 0eur salary is still too much
It was the perfect timing but:

1- His renewal would have costed them nothing
2- Replace him with the Matri, Anelka, Bendtner
3- Marotta: Buffon can stay as long as he wants (never perfect timing for Gigi) not that I am complaining.
4- He never said his desire was to leave Juve

But it's Business lol

Business decision ::yawn:
Calm down buttercup

Worked out for both parties: he was able to play more elsewhere rather than ride the bench here and we continued our winning cycle

And yes, it was business. I'm sure even in hindsight our board would have made the same decision.

Goalkeeper is different then an attacker. Goalkeeper always play longer. Gigi at 40 is probably the best we have. Del Piero at 37 (correct me if I am wrong) wasn't the best we have in the eye of conte or management

Vucinic, Quag and even Matri (for his poaching) were better than him, more effective in his last year. Giovinco would also be ahead of him in the pecking order. His moments of ingenuity became few and far between. I wouldn't mind if he stayed for another year if that's what Ale really wanted, but he'd hardly get any playing time and not because of personal decision.
