Roma :sergio:

They need to treat their players better if they won't to avoid situations like these. Benatia didn't ask for enormous wages few months ago, certainly was affordable player by Roma's standards, but eventually became unsatisfied after their reluctance to offer him slightly improved deal and forced his way out. It was more matter of a principle here. Benatia was on 1.25m net, while Burdisso earns 2.5m. Fantastic work by Roma's mgmt here. If something like this happened in Juventus I can only imagine the amount of flack our mgmt would get.
You just saved my time here :D

If I remember correctly his agent said that he is disappointed because Roma promised him new contract at the end of season, and when season ended they didn't keep their promise, and that's why Benatia asked to leave.

So in the end, it was Sabatini's fault

Burdisso came long time ago, they are stuck with him.

Benatia was offered 3mln but he rejected. He pretty much wanted to leave, it would be the same case with Vidal or Pogba here if they wanted out. We can't match wages of other top clubs.

Both him and his agent denied that Roma offered Benatia a new deal. He also said that money wouldn't be an issue for him to commit.

We do offer high wages atm. Tevez and Vidal are each on 10m gross and that is significant salary for any club in Europe.

I think it's the matter of principle, they had verbal agreement and Sabatini broke it. FFS check FI, I remember there was an interview with his agent where he said that Benatia doesn't feel valuable to the club and wants to leave. Roma only later decided to offer new contract and better wages.

I remember that interview as well. At the end of last season Benatia went to the media (CdS iirc) and claimed that certain promises weren't met. While he accepted small salary back in June/July, he was being promised that before the end of following season both parties would negotiate new (improved) terms and shrugged off speculations of his alleged high demands (3m was the amount that floated around and he denied of making that request). This is clearly on Roma's mgmt. The thing that saddens me the most is that another great player left the league and this time it could have been avoided.

why would lose your best defender because of a 1.5m wage difference, but sign a player you don't need for 30 million?

So Benatia is the difference between them being favorite or not?

I have no idea what you read, but what I read is that Benatia himself stated that the new contract offer this summer was 'a joke' while numbers said it was 2.5mln plus bonuses. What Benatia asked was a 400% higher wages, which after one year (of wonderful season) doesn't make much sense IMO.

I'm not defending anyone. I think that Roma can be blamed (if you're making a case how they signed Iturbe) but if it was (and it was) Benatia pushing for the way out then oh well.
