I'd definitely say Kovacic is best playing at the base of midfield and having deep runs, not being located up the pitch

He had some of his best games when played on the left side of the midfield, and as long as he isn't used as DLP, he can be very useful. While playing for Dinamo coach often shifted him between AM, LW, LM and those are positions in the midfield that would suit him the most. Physicality of the game in Italy is different than in Croatia so he might not be ready just yet to play in more advanced position, but he's got all the right moves to excel there imo, quick, good short passing, nice dribble, creativity...
