Same can be said of surprise league winners
When you say "surprise" you mean lucky? Or you dislike whenever underdog teams are winning championship trophy? do you realize how much they put into to win the trophy? And if so name me the lucky winner in the top leagues in the past seasons?

I can only interpret your comment as: Serie A >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Europe????

When the old system were used in the CL and your team was playing only against winners of own leagues it was much much better tournament, it was easier to win it because of olympic system, away goals rule and the number of teams, but every underdog had the chance to win it, now they have 0,0001% to win this trophy but even now sometime 5-6th teams of England can win it with some luck on their side like Chelsea and L'pool did

sour grapes

considering we are one of the biggest chokers in europe
We and Benfica - the biggest chokers of the finals of euro trophies and yet we managed to win all of them as the 1st team ever to do it

Man City could be considered lucky in 2013 'cause the only won by goal difference...

But in general, I agree, league competitions do show better the overall quality of a team compared to its competetors than knock-off rounds tournaments do.

but it wasn't surprise, they were contenders for the title from the beggining
I wasn't saying anything about that, but they are still rather lucky, as they only on won on goal difference, and we all know how that last deciding match played out.

Not saying they didn't deserve it though.
