What he was saying was actually based on performances in the last seasons (3 to 4), we all know what he is capable of, but has he consistently shown that over the past few years? No, the exception being first half of last season which he showed his old self for sure, and he had a great euro. But second half last season, and this season so far, plus the prevous 3 seasons up to around the Spalletti days, has generally been him being inconistent as hell, or consistently mediocre. I would easily take him over Marchisio anyways since the ceiling of their abilities is different, but that is if he only can perform that consistently. I'm a member of a footie forum thats for all fans (XT), and there is a stark difference there what the Roma fans think of him in past 3 years, and what they thought of him the years before that in the past decade since his debute. They are pretty much frustrated and fed up with his constant no-shows most seasons. Especially more so now he is the most highly paid Roma player, without actually proving that on the pitch.

For perspective, quoting a couple random typical posts from Roma fans in XT forum:

DDR can go to hell, most overpaid footballer in the world by far. No better than any average DM in the league yet gets paid 10 times more and everyone has to deal with his huge ego and tantrums.
Incredible to think for one minute a coach who has been in the profession for decades, benches players like De Rossi or Stek because he feels like it.Simply put, they are not good enough.De Rossi should not be given hero worship status by Roma fans as he has done nothing for years for this club. When you offered $30million,you take it & run.I would have swapped Verratti any day for him & Verratti with ZZ as coach would have come.

Coach he is referring to is Zeman, who got alot of heat by some fans for benching DDR and Stek, while he simply thought they werent good enough (its another matter his replacements of choice were worse, Goicochea and Taxi).

Ironic that this is what Zemen ended up getting :seven:

Thats another problem in itself, the replacements being worse, but the point remains the issue was "star" players performing like utterly useless hacks most of the time.

Yeah, De Rossi is overrated as hell. If Roma were smart, they'd sell him for whaatever City pays.

Gerrard has always been overrated. He never controls games, he just pops up with spectacular last minute winners.

Lampard is/was a far better player.

Steven Gerrard is another one of those imo, hasn't been that great in the past few years but still gets hero worship.
He has an excuse, he suffered on and off from injuries for 18 months, and plus he is ageing and his energetic and physical style doesnt work when his body doesnt keep up or recover as well as before. He has never been the most intelligent type of player (to say the least)so he had to reinvent himself a bit from his previous boombastic approach to things, have read very candid and insightful interview with him a year or so ago where he admits this and says he is working on readjusting after the injuries has hindered him in past couple of years.

in comparison, whats DDRs excuse? The recent Euro and in general his performances for Azzurri shows he is not someone who's body or abilities has quit on him, his issues are clearly attitude and mentality wise.

Agreed with Osman about the attitude and mentality. He was a lot better when younger and naive, would run his heart out and that created opportunities for others as well. Now he tries only to make pass only, to dictate play and not much running to create passing opportunity for others. Also too defensive minded and don't work in tandem with the other current Roma players imo.

 Thank you for saving me some time.

Seriously, the arguments against De Rossi are just
Hmm.. arguments that he has been average for 3-4 seasons? I wouldn't say those are laughable arguments.

So what if Mourinho wants him? Mourinho also wanted to sign Quaresma. As for more detailed answer you have it on Osman's post.

De Rossi hasn't been mediocre for 3 seasons Dule, stop your personal vendetta against him. The guy is a world class midfielder.
So it's Osman's vendetta too? Roma fans think the same apparently.

There's nothing personal. I used to love the guy but then I've realized he offers poor performances on regular basis. Like I said, it's not like he plays for 3-4 months, it's been years.
