Del piero would have excelled in any club. Totti would have probably done the same. The only conclusion you can plausibly draw, is that Del piero helped Juve a lot more than Totti helped Roma.

Placing Totti always above the club really was detrimental to Roma being a top club. In his best and worst of times, he was always more important than the team. So, if anything, Totti is a huge reason why Roma was never able to exceed mediocrity. In contrast, Del piero's humble attitude and patience allowed Juve to develop into a better team over the years.

For a certain period of time, you would be right. But how many falling outs have Roma had with players and coaches because of Totti over the years? Yes, he got many fans to support Roma in the beginning when he was great, but you need to weigh that against how much he's hurt Roma's development over the years too.

You do have a valid point, someone like Di Natale for example is def more important to Udinese than Del piero is to Juve. But with Totti, it gets a little tricky.

But then again, one could also say that Di Natale is a lot more important to Udinese than Totti is to Roma or DP was to Juve. Point is, it says more sometimes about the club than it does about the individual player.

True, it's more about how big the club is than anything else, but I'd factor in other things as well. What I am saying is that although Totti has carried Roma on his shoulders a lot during his career; we shouldn't forget how much trouble he caused. For me, at least, it's not just about having talent, but it's a lot more about having class and putting the club before yourself. Totti has never sacrificed himself for the team. That has definitely stunted Roma from getting stronger. What Del piero was to Juve, Raul to Real Madrid, Maldini to Milan, Henry was to Arsenal is more than Totti was to Roma.
