Mazzarri: 'Lecce most important game’
Walter Mazzarri has called the weekend’s meeting with Lecce his Napoli team’s most important game of the season so far.
The Partenopei go into the fixture having dropped points in each of their last four League games. After drawing 3-3 with League leaders Juventus on Tuesday night, the team lie in sixth place, nine points off the pace.
Looking ahead to the Salentini’s visit on Saturday night, Mazzarri is insistent that the San Paolo shows its support for his players, who he admits are struggling at the moment.
“Anyone that does play [for Napoli], I wish that they will be supported more so than normal, I will be forced to make a few changes due to fatigue, that is obvious.
“We are obliged to make a fresh effort against Lecce, it is a tricky game. The fans can give us a hand, support us until the 95th minute. It is the most important game of the year.
“I make this major appeal to the public for it is a game full of pitfalls. For the players, it is difficult to keep their concentration high.
“A match with Lecce is a risk, I will do everything to make sure the boys concentrate in this game.”
Mazzarri was pressed for more detail on expected changes to the first XI that he admits he is likely to make.
“For sure I will change aspects of the defence, you have to consider that three days later we have Villarreal and again after that we have Novara.
“You have to think of those that come in as not untested, but providing fresh force and energy. It is normal that when you change a lot that something does not work.
“We must unite to the last to bring home the result.”
The Coach was then asked about who he felt were favourites for the Scudetto.
“For me, always first and foremost are Milan, then Juventus. The Bianconeri have the advantage of not playing in Europe and a Coach who understands the club’s environment.”
