It doesn't look like it will be better anytime soon for them either. They might as well sell Sneijder and their old players bar Cambiasso and Zanetti and go for younger players, they can't compete for big stars now.
When shits happen (if they end up 6th-7th this season), expect Moratti to spend big.

Things were going pretty smooth since Calciopoli for Inter, so he stopped spending big as he used to in the past.

Once Moratti freaks out, he'll spend money left and right.

He won't be able to operate like before, due to Financial Fair Play (FFP). Inter have lots of debt.

FFP and lack of willingness to invest kills this theory. Calciopoli was his opportunist (manufactured) strike. Take note of how often Moratti complains about finances and see that Inter spent over a BILLION euros in 10 years to ultimately have success given to them on a plate. Those spending days are gone, Inter are bleeding money from a big wound, see this article from 2010: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/442218-the-price-of-inters-success

They are buying players on a budget now. They could still make 1-2 good signings per season as the club does generate considerable money after all, but their model has always been unsustainable and that means big players with big wages leaving.

Moratti should have invested in long-term when Calciopoli happened. Inter could have ruled Serie-A for decades. Instead, Moratti took the short-term solution and won all in couple of years. Now they'll stay trophyless for the next 50 years.
