I find it bemusing that the death of a horse takes precedent over the death of a man, I've yet to see any coverage on Sky of the tragedy in Pescara yesterday. Yet there are hourly updates on the condition of Muamba.

I'm happy to hear that Udinese have said they will look after his sister, I can't even begin to imagine what she is going through, so sad.
Kinda have to agree on all points here, btw.

You're only a couple pages late. ;)

i understand why the league suspended the matches, but i'm curious about one thing.

football must be the only profession in the world where an entire country suspends work for a death.

just saying. kind of ridiculous, if understandable.

not even the death of a president or prime minister would garner such a thing.
Suspends work? Is Monday declared a national holiday in Italy where everyone has the day off? What am I missing?

Or are we just talking about the suspension of calcio, where a player -- a guy who goes on the pitch as an athletic performer who rationally does not believe that he's risking death in taking up such a cause -- collapses and dies on national television while in service to that national sport?

It's true that in auto racing the drivers merely slow down instead of suspending the race in case of a death. But just how many sports do you know where players die in the middle of play like that?

Yeah, how come so many players die playing football/soccer? Racing has its moments too, but in most sports players get long term brain damage or physical damage instead of dying. Must be all that running I guess.

Very good question. There are so many more physically demanding sports out there. Maybe bad luck or more people? I'm assuming there are more professional footballers than professionals in any other sport.

Jezuz... the ignorance parade is out in force on so many footie sites right now.

"They should pre-screen players for these tragic heart conditions so that this doesn't happen."

Duh. I'm sure all these football teams with million-euro player contracts have never thought of this until now. Retard.

"Between Fabrice Muamba and now this, there's something really going wrong in football."

Yes, you statistical Cro-Magnon, two incidents constitutes an epidemic that should make everyone panic and assume a plague is now threatening every man, woman, and child on earth. Fucktard.

I understand the human instinct to seek blame whenever something bad or tragic happens. But seeking voodoo where none exists is just ignorance.

on the other hand I expected that from Malaysia, but instead they actually televised an announcement of Serie A postponement due to his death  there's hope yet for this country!
I completely understand you!
Hey Malaysia is a pretty nice country, loved being there
Wait you came to Malaysia, and you didn't feel like sending me a Private message? Our friendship ends here! Hope Gaitán will never wear Juve jersey :p!

There are way more professional footballers than any other sport and therefor the possibility of it happening is bigger than in other sports.

Basketball, baseball, rugby, golf and all the rest?
There have been quite a few similar instances happening within Hurling and Football here in Ireland. Only a few days ago, a twenty eight year old man from my county died while training.

 The Guardian writes a lot of good football pieces.
One of the only English media outlets worth paying attention too

Terrible news, the way the guy was struggling to get up was really sad to watch.

Because football is not supposed to be as serious as governing a country.

It's not about showing respect or anything of that sort as some here have suggested, it's about the news having shocked the fans and players only few minutes prior to games started.
But we are not talking about highschool football. We are talking about a multi billion dollar professional sport
