Surprise, surprise. Those two teams you mentioned last were the first ones to complain about the new rule.
Rightfully so.

Look at Udinese for example. In 2007 they bought Isla and Lukovic, in 2008 they bought Alexis Sanchez, in 2009 Asamoah. All non-EU, all play for their national team and all can big great profit to Udinese.
With the new non-EU rule they couldn't have done it.

Palermo bought Abel Hernandez and Cavani in 2008. In 2009 they bought Pastore. They couldn't have bought Pastore without selling one of their Uruguayan starlets if the new rule was implemented last summer.

Lazio too buys non-EUs (Muslera, Zarate, Kolarov, Ledesma).

These teams worked hard to create links in South America. They send scouts there and work seriously on finding and producing talent, which is what makes them survive in the long run. Buying cheap selling expensive.

The new rule will destroy everything they worked for in the past years.

:agree:

To add to the shit pile, the rule came out of nowhere with the teams already having planned their transfer strategy. This has the "Only in Italy" labelled all around it.

Just a side note Alen, Zarate has an Italian passport, but nice post.

It isn't unexpected to see who would complain about it most. Why not just have no non-EU in the Primavera squads as a start? They are going about the issue in the wrong way.

ROME, Jul 03: Pierluigi Collina has resigned as Italian football's referees boss :weee: to take a newly-created, similar role with European federation UEFA at the direct behest of president Michel Platini.

Collina, who refereed the 2002 World Cup Final before retiring, will be supported in his new European role by Frenchman Marc Batta and Scotland's Hugh Dallas, both also former international match officials.

Marcello Nicchi, president of the Italian referees' association, has praised Collina for bringing a breath of fresh air into the organisation in the wake of the match-fixing scandal which was exposed in court in 2006 and led to the relegation of Juventus :andyandbarcelona: and varied-length suspensions of assorted referees and assistants.

Nicchi is an acknowledged supporter of the use of modern technology to assist referees. This is contrary to the philosophy of Platini who favours the 'extra-assistants' system used in the Europa League last season and which may now be the subject of further experimentation worlwide.

This past week, in South Africa, FIFA president Sepp Blatter announced a reopening of the law-makers' study of the possible application of goal-line technology after a blunder by Uruguayan referee Jorge Larrionda in the England v Germany second round tie.

Instead, the talented South Americans and Africans will go to the Premier League and La Liga now and only weaken the Serie A even more.
That's the thing, if you narrow down the selection then clubs will only buy quality, because they can't waste the allocation.

Look at Catania's squad:

So many cheaper South Americans because that is all they can afford, but some aren't even very good.

I mentioned the Eu passport for the rule that just came up yesterday my Irish friend, not for the work permits.

Yeah, and Ledesma was bought from Lecce iirc.
The point remains though.

It doesn't matter from which league he arrived
I didn't read anything about changing that rule, JBF.
Until now the rule was that a non-EU player is "a player who doesn't hold an EU passport and is brought outside the Italian league".
So if you bought a non-EU passport holder from Genoa, he wasn't taking the NON-EU spot because he is already in the same league and he doesn't make the number of foreigners in the league grow.

I don't think they changed this rule. I read about this new rule they're implementing and I didn't see anywhere that they're changing anything regarding the above.

In that case, since he's bought from Catania, Martinez wo't take the non-EU spot.

Or am I wrong?

I didn't know anything about that rule you're talking about there. I just thought that they solely look at the passport when they judge a player for being a EU or a non EU one. So I guess you're in fact right.

Oh, great then. It's a relief to know that Martinez won't take a non-EU spot :D

And yeah, that was the rule. When we bought Almiron from Bari, Vanstrattan from Verona, Knezevic from Livorno, Amauri from Palermo and Melo from Fiorentina, they didn't take a non-EU spot because we brought them from the same league.

Btw, last year Caceres took a non-EU spot. Since he left, and having this new rule in mind, we won't have to sell a non-EU player in order to bring one.

Does this mean we can bring both Dzeko and Krasic? I know it's far fetched but I am talking technicalities now.

what a stupid rule.... if the players from italy are not good enough and the foreign are just better footballers than sign them.... its not their problem that the kids in italy have forgotten how to play football
