Albertini: 'Italy needs reserve league'
FIGC Vice-President Demetrio Albertini suggests creating a reserve league in Serie A to prevent young talent escaping Italy.
“In Serie A, B, the youth teams and even Lega Pro there are too many foreign players,” warned Albertini in La Repubblica newspaper.
“They represent a limitation to the growth of our young talent. In my view, the existence of youth academies is no longer sufficient.
“We need entire reserve teams, as they already do in Spain, who can play regularly in a professional league.
“In order to grow, these youngsters must measure themselves up against players who are older than they are, not the same age.”
Italy does not have a reserve league in the same way as England, nor second squads such as Barcelona B who play in Segunda Division.
Instead there is a Primavera league – youth teams – who face off regularly for a Scudetto and Coppa Italia of their age group.
When senior players are suspended or returning from injury, they have been known to play for the Primavera side.
Albertini also defended the wages paid out to top stars during a time of economic crisis in Italy.
“The wages are lower than in the past. I think the path that the big clubs must take is a salary cap, then the rest can be tied to bonuses.”
