Italian named world's best ref Tuesday 6 January, 2009

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Roberto Rosetti has been named the world’s top referee for 2008 by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics.

Italian football is constantly complaining about the standard of its officials, but one of the Serie A referees has topped the list of men in black the world over.

The IFFHS announced the findings today as Rosetti lead the way with 204 points compared to 126 for second-placed Lubos Michel of Slovakia.

Frank De Bleeckere of Belgium came in third with just 61 points, followed by Germany’s Herbert Fandel on 60.

It is a leap up the standings for Rosetti, who a year ago was in fifth place on 55 points.

Italy have a strong record in this particular award, as Pierluigi Collina was named top of the all-time world referee ranking.

During his career, Collina led the IFFHS standings for six years on the trot.

Reports: Milan pounce for Pennant

There are reports that Milan are ready to swoop for Liverpool outcast Jermaine Pennant.

The 25-year-old has fallen out of favour at Anfield and his contract is set to expire in the summer.

According to English sources, Milan have prepared a pre-contract agreement and are expecting to welcome Pennant to San Siro in the summer on a free transfer.

Rumours suggest that Real Madrid saw a £3m bid accepted two weeks ago, but a deal failed to materialise due to Pennant's personal terms.

Milan fans will remember Pennant for his role in the 2007 Champions League Final where he impressed despite Liverpool's 2-1 defeat.

Wigan Athletic, Blackburn Rovers and Tottenham are also in the hunt for Pennant, but their efforts could be blown away by a bid from Milan.

Meanwhile, Milan's hopes of luring Liverpool defender Daniel Agger have faded.

Although Agger isn't willing to renew his contract at Anfield, manager Rafa Benitez is determined to keep the 24-year-old at the club and Milan's efforts are likely to be rebuffed.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic did not leave a good impression on Fabio Cannavaro. “He said I won the Scudetto thanks to him, but I got the World Cup and Ballon d’Or!”

The two former Juventus teammates evidently did not get along, as the Italian international has launched a stinging attack on the Swede.

“When we were playing together at Juve, he told me: 'If you won the Scudetto aged 30 it was thanks to me. Before that you hadn’t won anything,” Cannavaro told Chi magazine.

“We went our separate ways after that as he joined Inter and I came to Real Madrid. Since then I’ve won the World Cup, a Ballon d’Or and another two Liga titles. I crushed him!”

Ibra’s arrogance is a well known character trait, but it seems as if Cannavaro did not appreciate this behaviour.

The Inter star has said on numerous occasions that he thinks he deserves the European Player of the Year title, but that just riled up Fabio even more.

“For the moment if he wants to hold the Ballon d’Or his best chance is to come over to my house, as I won it in 2006!”

Canna has been one of the most successful Italian exports in recent years, but reveals it’s not always easy, especially if you are from Naples.

“Today one of my teammates said to me: 'Italian? Ah, Mafioso.’ It is easy for a local problem to become a generalisation.”

as long as he goes to Inter i don't care

but i think we can all agree that right now the only thing that is going to stop :inter: winning the scudetto is :inter: their squad is already teetering on the bring of chaos and bringing in "the golden brat" would almost certainly lead to disruption

in fact if he acts like we all know he will it could be the singing of the year......for US:weee:

PELE

"In fact, the Juventus president almost reached a deal with Santos which included support from Fiat. I thought about coming to Europe a lot, but I preferred to stay with the team in my heart, Santos."
